چکیده

Cotton fabric was grafted with a poly (acrylamide-co-itaconic acid) co-polymer via ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) induced graft co-polymerization in an aqueous medium. The grafted cotton fabric was loaded with Ag nanoparticles by entrapment of Ag+ ions into a grafted polymer network, followed by borohydride reduction. The resulting Ag nanoparticle-loaded grafted fabric was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The Ag nanoparticles were almost monodisperse in nature and their average diameter was approximately 12.5 nm. The fabric shows antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli depending upon the extent of grafting of the polymer network onto the fabric and the amount of nano Ag loaded into the grafted fabric. Finally, the Ag-loaded grafted fabric is found to suppress the bacterial growth approximately 3 h after the immersion of the fabric into a nutrient broth at 37 oC.

Preparation and Characterization of a Cotton-Based Nanocomposite Hydrogel

In this work, hydrogel nanocomposites were synthesized by solution polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and itaconic acid (IA) in the presence of cotton fabric. Ammonium persulfate (APS) was used as the polymerization initiator in the presence of a crosslinker, methylene bisacrylamide (MBA). Insertion of Ag followed by reduction of Ag+ cations results in a hydrogel nanocomposite. The ...

Effects of Polycarboxylic acids on Untreated Cotton and Solubilised Sulphur Dyed Cotton

A number of polycarboxylic acids butane tetracarboxylic acid BTCA, polyacrylic-co-maleic acid PAMA, citric acid, maleic-itaconic MA-IA were examined, in combination with sodium hypophosphite SHP in order to give a similar high fabric crease recovery performance and whiteness index to traditional formaldehyde based crease agents. BTCA showed to be the best crease resist agent for crosslinking co...

Laundering durable antibacterial cotton fabrics grafted with pomegranate-shaped polymer wrapped in silver nanoparticle aggregations

To improve the laundering durability of the silver functionalized antibacterial cotton fabrics, a radiation-induced coincident reduction and graft polymerization is reported herein where a pomegranate-shaped silver nanoparticle aggregations up to 500 nm can be formed due to the coordination forces between amino group and silver and the wrapping procedure originated from the coincident growth of...
